~Jennifer Lopez's Restaurant~

Well, last I heard Jennifer closed down the place after she had her twins. So, has anyone actually ate in this restaurant called Madre's located in Pasadena, California? Was it any good? I just fount out that this place was designed by Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic! I love her style. I found these photos in her book and she goes to explain that Jennifer envisioned the place as cuban, sexy and romantic. From the photos the restaurant looks very elegant, but I'm not really getting the cuban vibe!

  1. wow! Looks amazing! It looks as though you would NOT bring your children there... Or order red wine with dinner! :) I would love to go and test it out!

  2. I heard this restaurant is closed late 2008. Yelp.com confirms it.

  3. I heard they closed it down though. We were supposed to go there for a Christmas Dinner last year and they changed the location because it was closed.

It was very expensive though. A friend of mine went there for a Valentines dinner one year and she said it was very expensive and they had a set menu for that night.

  6. Well, take it from this cuban...the place doesn't look very "cuban." It's was a lovely place from what I could see. Absolutely, loved Shabby Chic and so sad that she is going out of business.

  7. Absolutely love it!Gosh, I hope not! I have had Madres on my 'places to eat' list since she opened it:(

  8. I've been to Madre...I went there several years ago for New Years Eve. The food was great and the decor amazingly gorgeous! It looked just like these photos.

  9. My husband and I ate there for our
8th anniversary:) The food was very good. We were seated at a secluded table. We were told it was Jennifer's favorite table. We would have loved to go back.

  10. this doesn't look very cuban to me... and a little too wanna-be posh.

  11. I actually had lunch once at Madre's a couple of months after it first opened. I'm a big J.Lo fan and knew that it was done in Shabby Chic decor which is why I had to go. The food was definitely Cuban, but Americanized and pricey. It was a gorgeous place tucked in Old Pasadena. The restaurant in itself is a visual feast for those who love this style (not cuban, although the servers wore cuban style shirts).

  13. What a pretty restaurant! So Rachel Ashwell, with the ornate mirror, chandeliers, and seat covers...how lovely, but as you mentioned, not too sure about a Cuban vibe - seems more romantic but def. a reflection of both Jennifer's and Rachel's styles combined :)

  14. I never ate thee when it was Madre's... but I have eaten at that location many of times... it has been home to a few different restaurants... I wonder what it will be next...hmmmmm

  15. I don't know what she is talking about, no way is there any kind of cuban flare in that restaurant. But it is surely romantic and elegant.

I am crazy about the ornate mirror - my kind of style!

  17. I ate there twice. The first time we went her ex-husband was still managing the place. He was very pleasant and attractive, but short. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about and the decor was beautiful. The place itself was very tiny but nicely decorated. The staff was pleasant and the atmosphere was nice. It was a nice experience overall. They had curtained booths that were fun to sit in and a nice bar setting. The bathroom had pretty candles burning and the whole restaurant had a very pleasant flowery smell. Jennifer Lopez did a great job making it perfect and pretty.

  18. Wow, this place looks like a dream!!! And I agree with you, where is the Cuban flavor? In my opinion this restaurant has more French style than Cuban...

  19. This restaurant seems very nice and what I prefer in Rachel Ashwell's book is the shabby house of pamela Anderson but I've read that she has moved and sold all the furnitures !

  20. I think it's beautiful-especially the molding around the booth and the tiny chandelier. Perfect.

  21. I remember watching a show on the making of this restaurant. It is the most lovely restaurant I have ever seen. I think I am too messy to eat there:-) Sorry to hear that it is closed. I would gladly take all the furniture and lighting!!!1

  26. I was there soon after it opened. I remember it being very romantic and cozy. It was such a pretty place and it is too bad that it shut down. My absolute favorite place in L.A. that is even prettier than Madre's (in my opinion) is called Sur.

I LOVE your blog. I love coming here for longs visits... will be back again soon.

  27. There was Cuban cigar box theme throughout the place that you don't see in these photographs. That motif was repeated in numerous places in the restaurant: the menus, on the walls, etc. It was gorgeous and the food was good. Very sad when it closed...great date spot.

  28. I would never have pictured it being so Shabby/Chic charming... maybe I pictured it more va va voom style or something! Anyway, Rached created a beautiful space! I love the ruffly tablecloths.

And no, the Cuban in my is not picking up on anything Cuban in here.

  29. nice place, but yeah, i'm not getting the cuban vibe either. anyway thanks for the link! the tattoo of the strawberry is indeed on the inside of my arm, that one did not hurt at all, the one on top of muy foot i felt just a little, but i guess it all depends on how tolerant you are to pain and of how much you want to get it. you should go in a tattoo parlor and speak to the people there, browse through designs-it'll ease up the process, i promise, and they'll give you great tips!

  30. i went to madre's opening night! Its definitely not cuban vibe'd unless its the upper echelon of cuba. However...its very elegant and cozy. Food & service was great! I think it would have stayed around longer if it was in the Hollywood Area.

  31. I've been reading through your posts - from the most recent until this one - and am SUCH a fan of your blog - I'm in heaven!

I had to comment on this - because I live in Pasadena and this was my husband's and my favorite restaurant. The decor, of course - it is even more beautiful in person!! The food....SO good. Original, fresh and it was such a great date night. They had live music and professional bartenders just rounded out this restaurant.

I'm so bummed it is closed!!

    Hugs on Labor Day!
    Tracy.

  33. Hi, really enjoy your blog too! I just read through all the comments, and had to just say I really wish I could have gone to this restaurant...such a beautiful visual treat for the eyes! I know I am- oh, about 4 years behind here,- but I just wanted to comment that based on what Rachel states in her book, she wasn't going for a "Cuban" look, per se, but "Old Havana Style". This is where she incorporated the creams, light greens, etc. I think it is exquisite, and am modeling my future home on her color choices :) Thanks for the lovely inspirations!

  34. Just discovered your blog while researching some info on Rachel Ashwell's take on this restaurant, and must say that I agree it is a shame it is gone :( What a visual treat for the eyes! I know I am about -Oh, 4 years behind here-...but wanted to comment that I believe it was a misconception about the restaurant being done in "Cuban Style" per se; I believe she stated in her book that it was "Old Havana Style"- which is where she pulled the creams, light greens, etc. from. I love it so much that I am using the color schemes in my future home!! I can't wait to pull it all together! Really enjoy your blog!
